Summary / Abstract:

ENThe most significant concepts of the individual psychology of Alfred Adler are social interest and life style. Social interest is defined as a positive attitude toward others and life in general, as an interest in the interest of mankind, as a participations in groups activities. Social interest involves the classical tri-partitc conception of human nature: thinking, feeling, and acting. Life style is represented as the purposiveness, goal directedness, unity, and uniqueness of individual. It's the manner in which an individual behaves toward three problems of life: problems of behavior toward others, problems of occupation, and problems of love. Adlerian noted that the life style of individual is associated with the degree of social interest. The aim of this study was to detect the relationships between students' life style and social interest. The participants were 376 students (242 women and 134 men). The mean age of the sample was 20 years with a range of 18 to 25 years. Each subject responded to two instruments: social interest and life style scale. To measure the social interest's degree was used the Social Interest Scale (SIS) designed by J. E. Crandall (1974). The Life Style Scale (LSS) designed by R. M. Kern (1982) provides information to the participant related to five life style themes: Control, Perfectionism, Need-to-please, Victim, and Martyr. According to the investigation results, most students demonstrate low and average social interest. There were no significant differences between men' and women' social interest degree (7.28 <7.47). The results showed that most students demonstrate average of all life styles themes. There were no dominant life style themes. The results of this study suggest higher perfectionism and need to please in female young adults than in male young adults. The results from this study confirmed the relationship between social interest and perfectionist life style and need to please life style. Data showed that as higher participants' social interest as stronger tendencies toward perfectionism life style theme. The results were opposite than expected. Also data showed that as higher participants' social interest as stronger tendencies toward need-to-please life style theme. But there were no relationships between social interest and control life style, victim life style and martyr life style themes. [From the publication]
