Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article deals with the image of woman in Lithuanian historical legends. The main рurposе is to discuss the functions of women. Considerable attention is paid to four thematic groups of historical legends. The roles of women in historical legends are compared to those in etiological legends and in fairytales. In Lithuanian etiological legends it is mostly male mythical figures who create the world. In historical legends, on the other hand, women also take part in the act of creation. The creating activities of the mythical females is very close to people's everyday tasks. The second category of women in the historical legends are the ordinary women, who change the world by uttering magical words. In the legends describing people turned into stones and traveling lakes, women's creating activities are motivated by their unconscious predestination. The women from underworld, depicted in legends about vanished places, comprise the third category of females in historical legends. One of their functions is guarding of treasures. Besides, they play an important role as mediators between people and the beings from the underworld. The death of woman is significant in the way that it ensures originating of new objects. This motive is close to the myth about the death of mythical hero, who's body becomes the material for creation of the world. [From the publication]
