Summary / Abstract:

LTXIX–XX a. ENIn the XIX-XX centuries Vilnius University became an arena for battles about political systems, and an object influenced by them. No period in the University’s development was ever conducive to a search for freedom and truth. On the contrary, the University was an arena for the domination of ideologies of nationalism, authoritarianism and totalitarianism. There is a need to correct historiographical images that do not take account of the importance of these matters for historical recollection, and that represent the University’s past only from one particular perspective of historical consciousness. If the 250th anniversary was a compromise of Russian and Polish memories, then the 350th anniversary – 10 years after its reopening in 1919 – was the culmination of Polish memories, reinforcing the link with the old university. Lithuanian historical memories were conditioned by romantic visions of Lithuania’s golden age in the XIII–XIV c. These do not include the latter period of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania with its university. The reference point of Communist historical memory was the Labour University of 1919 or the Russian reform of universities of 1803. On the 400th anniversary the ‘oldest university in Eastern Europe’ idea was an important alternative historical memory during the Communist era. In this regard it surpassed even the limits of romantic Lithuanian historical memory. At the intersection of XX–XXI c., the directions of historiography oblige us to consider manifestations of local Polish-speaking culture (including the University) as part of Lithuania’s heritage. Historiography also allows us to consider the University in the context of Eastern European and Jesuit universities – the furthest East and having no competitors in terms of its effect – as one of Lithuania’s most important “commemorative places”.
