Politikos pinklės: Antanas Smetona - JAV valstybės departamento regratyje

LTŠaltinio publikacijoje skelbiamas vertingas kompleksas dokumentų, susijusių su LR prezidento Antano Smetonos gyvenimu pasitraukus iš Lietuvos po sovietų okupacijos. Išeivijos studijų centrui pluoštelį dokumentų – savo paties surinktų tekstų JAV Valstybės departamente apie A. Smetoną kopijas padovanojo profesorius Alfredas Erichas Sennas. Tai tėra tik dalis tenai saugomų šios tematikos dokumentų. Pagal turimų lapų numerius galima spręsti, kad Valstybės departamente buvo užvesta speciali Smetonos byla. Čia skelbiami dokumentai chronologiškai aprėpia gana platų permainingų įvykių laikotarpį nuo 1932 iki 1943 metų. Pagal datas bei nagrinėjamą problematiką juos galima sugrupuoti į tris dalis: 1) nepriklausomos Lietuvos laikais Amerikos diplomatų 1932-1938 metais rašyti laiškai, kurie atspindi kai kurias užsienio diplomatų veiklos Lietuvoje detales, taip pat padeda atskleisti tam tikrus Smetonos bruožus, išryškina sudėtingą Lietuvos politinę situaciją, 2) 1940 m. amerikiečių ambasadų Berlyne ir Lisabonoje susirašinėjimas su JAV Valstybės departamentu ir svarstymai dėl vizų išdavimo A.Smetonai ir jo šeimos nariams, 3) dokumentai, susiję su A.Smetonos padėtimi ir veikla Amerikoje. Dokumentai skelbiami pirmą kartą. Sudarytose antraštėse nurodomas dokumento numeris ir pavadinimas. Dokumentai publikuojami originalo (anglų) kalba. Laiškų kalba netaisyta, neįskaitomos vietos žymimos dviem brūkšneliais (- -). Skelbiami dokumentai papildys turimą informaciją ir pravers tolesnėms Smetonos asmenybės bei veiklos studijoms.

ENThe source publication presents a valuable complex of documents related to the life of President of the Republic of Lithuania Antanas Smetona after he withdrew from Lithuania after the soviet occupation. These documents were donated to the Exile Study Centre by professor Alfred Erich Senn. It is only a part of documents on these topics kept in the U.S. Department of State. According to the numbers of pages of the available documents it can be presumed that the U.S .Department of State had a separate case on Smetona. The presented documents chronologically cover a rather wide period of significant changes from 1932 to 1943. They can be divided into three groups according to the dates and the topic: letters written by American diplomats in the period of Lithuania’s independence in 1932–1938, which reflect certain details in foreign diplomats’ activities in Lithuania as well as help reveal certain Smetona’s characteristics and highlight the complicated political situation of Lithuania, 2) the correspondence of American embassies in Berlin and Lisbon with the U.S. Department of State as well as contemplations of the issue of visa to A. Smetona and his family members, 3) documents related to Smetona’s situation and activities in America. These documents are announced for the first time. The titles contain the number of the document and its title. The documents are published in the language of the original (English). The language of the letters was not edited, and the illegible places are marked with two hyphens. The announced documents will compliment the available information and will serve for further studies of Smetona’s personality and activates.
