Summary / Abstract:

ENThe author of the article presents a review of Vytautas Kubilius' literary criticism and its evolution, defines the specific means of his aesthetics and methodology, and characterises the style of his critique. Kubilius' works appeared during the first post war decade and represented an opposition to a vulgar sociological method. The main criteria of a psychological interpretation of literature were set forth in his book Looking for New Ways (1964), which formed the basis of a number of his monographs, such as Lyrics by Salomėja Nėris (1968), Writings by Kazys Boruta (1980), Writings by Ieva Simonaitytė (1987), Antanas Vaičiulaitis (1993), and Jonas Aistis (1999). While discussing the development of literature, Kubilius refers not only to historical or psychological contexts, but also stresses the internal logic of literature, especially the traditions of genres and trends. This approach has largely shaped the contents of such publications as 20th Century Lithuanian Lyrics (1982), Interchange and Synthesis of the Genres (1986), The Tradition of Romanticism in Lithuanian Literature (1993) or 20th Century Literature (1995).The main function of literary criticism, according to Kubilius, is to reveal the aesthetic value of a literary work. He extends the concept of 'artistic value' and applies it not only to the literal, but also to the spiritual dimension of the text. As regards his style, Kubilius keeps to the tradition of 'ornamented' writing. The above generalizations rest on the analysis of Kubilius' literary criticism published during the Soviet period as well as on his new publications that appeared after the restoration of Lithuanian independence, namely, Literature during the Historical Break (1997) and The Intractable Muse (2001).
