ENAs computer technologies are starting to affect the sphere of historical studies, this article attempts to present a brief overview the possibilities to apply computer corpora to the analysis of the role of the army in our society by revealing what army images and associations exist in society. There are two periods of the Lithuanian State, i.e. the declaration of the Republic and the re-establishment of its sovereignty. Hence there are two armies, i.e. the one that defended, created and supported the sovereignty of the pre-war Lithuanian Republic whereas the second is a constituent part of the state system of the present Lithuanian Republic. The present article aims to answer the following questions: what was the image of the first army and what is associated with the second army? In the analysis of the army of the pre-war Lithuanian Republic the main problems were the choice of sources and the subjectivity of the study itself. For the study of the army of the present Lithuanian Republic and its significance in society, computer technologies, or, more specifically, computer corpora and their means of processing data were used. Computer corpora enabled us to use and effectively process large amounts of texts, which made it possible to distinguish the most frequent contextual partners of the words under investigation. The results revealed certain tendencies that prevail in our society or influence it. The present investigation is also an attempt to prove the necessity to combine a variety of methods because different methods lead to different results, and this approach enables a researcher to see the totality. Finally, the results of the analysis have shown that it would be purposeful to apply computer technologies to analyse the pre - war texts by creating a specialised data - base. [text from author]
