ENThe article analyzes the circumstances of the founding of the Franciscan Order in Lithuania. Disclosing the rapid growth of the only in the 13th c. created order it becomes more understandable that the appearance and establishment of the Franciscans at the time of King Mindaugas in Lithuania were not a coincidence. The article suggests that the plain mentions of the Franciscan brothers, existing in the lists of the witnesses' documents issued by Mindaugas, can be valued as footprints of their missionary activities. From the data presented in the article one can see that the Franciscans settled for stable life in Lithuania from the first half of the 14th c. The most important center of the Franciscan's activities was the Vilnius convent. The activities of the Vilnius convent expanded after the baptism of Lithuania when there did not remain any formal obstacles for them to carry out their pastoral care activities, to form brotherhoods, to be missionaries among the Orthodox. A comparison of the activities of both families of the Franciscan Order - the conventuals and observants (Bernardines) - allows one to support the already observed phenomenon: until the very arrival of the Jesuits in Lithuania among the other missionary orders active in Lithuania the Franciscans were the most significant in the initial Christianization of Lithuania. The role of the diocesan and monastery priests in the Christianization of Lithuania in the 14t h-! 6th c. could become the object of future scholarly discussion. [From the publication]
