ENThe hypocritical democratisation during the detente (1956-1964) left in its wake much more alert and vigorous national consciousness in Lithuania. Art once again became rooted in the tradition of folk art. Under the aegis of the Puppet Theatre, which came under the least rigorous control from the censors, artist Vitalis Mazūras shaped a cosmogonic representation of the world, characterised by the idealised vision of the archaic past and the Poetic spirit of Romanticism. In response to the careerist tendencies and the consumerist veneration °f the material that came to the fore after the declaration of independence l n 1990, the deformed semblance of freedom acquired in Lithuanian stagedesign fantastic forms, which have a strong impact on the viewer. Jonas Arčikauskas transformed the historicising style of theatrical costume, which became the sign of the contrast between the external pomp and inner emptiness. In Arčikauskas' work the rebellious Romanticism, illumined by l rony, was reborn. - 229 - The suspense at the threshold of a new century imbued Lithuanian scenography with a mystical spirit. Oscillation across the boundary between visions and reality, between death and life gave birth to the atmosphere of decay and instability of forms. The theatre of Lithuania put on the colours of the dramatic Romanticism. The feeling of insecurity, that permanent companion of the Lithuanian psyche, which had created favourable conditions for the Romanticism to strike root in it, remains alive in the chaos of today.
