Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article analyzes the political processes in Eastern Baltic region in the beginning of the 15th c. From the end of the 14th c. to the beginning of the 15th c., the international situation in the region was constantly changing. The states of the region were influenced by important internal changes. A very important question is how much influence the War and the Battle of Grunwald between the united republic of Poland - Lithuania and the Teutonic Order had. The article also controverts to a popular view about Vytautas' plans to take over the lands in the East of Prussia and the plans to destroy the Teutonic Order. Witold had a main goal to establish himself as the Great Duke of the Great Duchy of Lithuania and to regain the land of Samogitia, which had belonged to The Order. The most important changes after the Battle of Grunwald were the revival of international written communication, the birth of a polemic political literature, and also the transferral of regional conflicts to the wider European context. Internationalization of the conflict was useful to Poland and Lithuania. One of the useful effects was that Witold made a name for himself in farther European countries. The victory in the Battle of Grunwald and the fortunate completion of the War against the Teutonic Order were important for Jagiello and Witold in two ways. First of all, it was a significant event for their further establishment of their authority in Poland and Lithuania. Secondly, a new international policy started between Witold and Jagiello. It featured intensive diplomatic missions, wider communicative horizons and invoking new propagandic instrumentality. [text from author]
