Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Indrica; Indrica, Latvija; Jėzuitai; Jėzuitų misija; Jėzuitų misijos; Katalikų bažnyčia; Lietuvos Didžioji Kunigaikštystė (LDK; Grand Duchy of Lithuania; GDL); Latgala; Latgalos barokas; Latvija (Latvia); Medinė sakralinė architektūra; Medinės bažnyčios; Plateriai; Pliaterių giminės fundacijos; Foundations of Plateriai family; Grand Duce of Lithuania; Indrica; Jesuits; Jesuits mission; Latgala; Latvia; Plater family; Roman Catholic Church; The Baroque of Latgala; The missions of the Jezuit order; Wood sacral architecture; Wooden Churches.

ENIn the 17th and 18th centuries, the Roman Catholic Church exerted considerable influence on church art and architecture in Latgale (Polish Livonia); the Society of Jesus and the Plater family also were influential. An example of a successful cooperation between the monks and the local nobility is the history of the Indrica Parish Church. The article deals with the oldest surviving building of the Latgale wooden church in the context of the history of art and the regional history of the Catholic Church. The article is presents the Indrica Catholic Church built in 1698. Like most of the parish churches in the region, its ornament proceeded in several stages, including the period associated with the activity of the Jesuit mission (1756-1780). The church building and its decoration reflect the typical Lettigalian Baroque features of architecture and art. The plan and spatial composition of Indrica Church have become a model for later constructions: In 18th century, more variations in different religious buildings, inspired by the complex plan of the Indrica Church, are encountered. It is noted that today the Indrica Church is an important example of architectural and artistic traditions of the 17th and 18th centuries and a great witness of the activity of the Jesuit Order. The Indrica Church is the oldest surviving example of wooden architecture in Eastern Latvia, providing valuable knowledge of the local architectural traditions of the 17th century. For research purposes it can be compared with other wooden churches of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
