ENIn the printed words of J.Bielinskis, a historian of the former University of Vilnius... "civil and military architecture (architectura civilis et militaris) was taught at Vilnius jesuit Academy throughout its existence" ...since 1579. But only in 1793, Laurynas Stuoka-Gucevičius (1753-1798) was issued the first patent, or degree, of the professor of architecture by the highest educational authority of that time - the Education Commission. It also meant the official recognition of the Department of Architecture which became the first art subject in our oldest sanctury of science. That is why the year 1993 is celebrated as the 200th anniversary of the foundation of the department of architecture and the Academy of Art. Tite departments of painting, drawing-graphic art and sculpture, giving rise to the present Academy of Art, were established at the University of Vilnius soon after. That main document, the patent of the professor of architecture, was issued on October 8, 1793. It was signed by the Chairman of the Education Commission Joannes Kosakovskis (1755-1808), his secretary Ignas Vilčevskis and marked with a wax seal. Consequently, the newly certified professor spent the autumn term of 1793 and the spring term of the following year working with studentes, though he did not receive payment (because it took time to get a professorship and resources for a new department from the Education Commission in Warsaw. One more argument, which was even published twice, claimed that the professor’s patent was signed by Josephus Kosa- kovskis (1738.03.16-1794.05.09) This was invalid due to the fact that he had quite a different world outlook, committed a number of offences and was executed (hanged in Warsaw) for treason against the motherland for collaboration with the tsarist authorities. When this obvious falsification was disproved, the celebration of the 200th anniversary was legally sanctioned. [...].
