Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Prūsų kalba; Wojciech Smoczyński; Vokiečių kalbos skoliniai; Old Prussian; Wojciech Smoczyński; German loans.

ENThe review discusses the monograph of Wojciech Smoczyński, focused on the impact of the German language on the old Prussian language. The study analyses the swints rule, invented by the author at the beginning of the book, according to which the old Prussian enC, emC type combinations appear as inC, imC. The reviewer shows that the swints rule is contradictory and faulty. He states that the correct understanding of old Prussian phonetics should be based on the correct understanding of the graphology of old Prussian language monuments. Meanwhile, the author gives another faulty ia- rule next to the swints rule. Based on this rule, there emerge such exotic guesses that are inconceivable by Baltic linguists. The reviewer expresses surprise as to how the ia- rule appeared in the monograph. He states that the catechisms actually contain the i/a- stem, but that does not mean that every -ia- should in all cases mean the same as said in the book. The author of the monograph does not pay attention to palatalization in Prussian. The reviewer also reproaches that the book does not analyse typological probability. This might determine the author’s faulty statement that the old Prussian words sūnus [son], sesuo [sister] and even motina [mother] are German borrowings. The reviewer notes that the author of the book also considers the words agins, anctan, genno, ginnis, cawx, mealde, spenis, talus, tickint, wagnis to be borrowed from German. According to the reviewer, this author’s opinion is original yet unfounded, hence not worth a critique.
