Summary / Abstract:

ENDefinite places and spaces occupy an important place in the oeuvre of Czesław Miłosz. One of such spaces is Lauda – historical and ethnographical region on the right bank of the river Niewiaża (lith. – Nevėžis) that was for centuries inhabited by the noblemen. The boundary of Lauda goes to the north of Kowno (lith. – Kaunas), includes an area between Kiejdany (lith. – Kėdainiai) and Szawle (lith. – Šiauliai), that is to say it lies at the frontier of present Panevėžys, Radviliškis and Kėdainiai districts. I n the Polish literature of the 19th century image of Lauda was popularised by H. Sienkiewicz in his novel Potop (The Flood) (1886). Half a century later Cz. Miłosz created his own, poetical-metaphysical image of Lauda. Lauda is the title of the third part of the poem Gdzie wschodzi słońce i kędy zapada (Where the Sun Rises and Goes Down) (1974). Here Lauda is identified with the spiritual space composed of the fragments of the images from the childhood, reminiscences about the people that are gone. To the theme of Lauda Miłosz returned as well in the selection of essays Ogród nauk (The Garden of Knowledge) (1986) and Szukanie ojczyzny (In Search of a Homeland) (1992). [From the publication]
