ENOn 8 June of this year, a memorial was unveiled in Juodkrantė, on the lagoon shore, to commemorate a tragic episode of the 1863 uprising – a naval expedition traveling from London to Lithuania to aid the rebels, led by Colonel Teofil Łapiński (1827– 1886). The idea to commemorate this campaign and its fallen participants was proposed by the Western Third (Naval) Unit of the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union, and its implementation was discussed with the local community and Neringa municipality. During discussions, some Juodkrantė residents doubted whether this historical event was connected to Juodkrantė, while most Lithuanian historians and historical memory custodians showed little interest in the naval aspects of the uprising. Thus, this article aims to introduce the military operation known as the “expedition to Lithuania” and dispel unfounded doubts, particularly by listening to the memories of historical event witnesses that authentically reveal the feelings, experiences, and personal evaluations of people from that time.
