Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article analyses the relationship between the phenomenological and psychological methods on the basis of Edmund Husserl’s thesis: “objects are to me that which they are: the products of real and possible cognisance”. Both methods have the same aim: examining the workings of the consciousness. Both methods confirm that everything we are cognisant of has been transformed and re-created by our subjectivity. Therefore, the parallelism of the phenomenological and psychological methods is above all determined by the shared goal of cognisance: the mechanism of correlating the consciousness and the object, or broadly speaking, an analysis of the phenomenology of the spirit. Both methods share the idea of the primacy of the consciousness that is accentuated in transcendental cognisance, but is realised in different ways. The article claims that the most important factors distinguishing phenomenological from psychological reading of literature are phenomenological reduction and eidetic analysis, during which the attention is transferred from the author’s worldview onto the “text body” and the reader. The article deals with the difficulties of Husserlian phenomenology and its tendency to irrationalisation and ontologisation at the hands of French existentialists. The article concludes with the suggestion that current literary criticism should be concerned not only with refining and distinguishing the above-mentioned methods, but also with the issue of methodological heterogeneity.
