Wspomnienia Józefa Zmitrowicza jako źródło do poznania aktywności Kościoła katolickiego w Wilnie na początku XX wieku

LTJuzefas Zmitrovičius (Józef Zmitrowicz) gimė 1879 m. spalio 9 d. Lydos valsčiuje valstiečių šeimoje. Kad įgytų išsilavinimą, persikėlė į Sankt Peterburgą, kuriame 1894 m. baigė vidurinę mokyklą. Iki 1898 m. mokėsi valstybinėje gimnazijoje, ten susidomėjo lenkų literatūra. Įstojo į Peterburgo universiteto teisės, fakultetą, bet baigė tik tris kursus. 1904 m. apsigyveno Vilniuje, vertėsi mokytojaudamas. Tada tarp jaunimo ėmė propaguoti filaretų sąjūdžio idėjas. 1906-1916 m. buvo „Jaunimo bičiulių draugijos“ sekretorius. Tuomet baigė teisės mokslus ir Charkove gavo advokato licenciją. Prieš Lenkijai atgaunant nepriklausomybę 1918 m. buvo labai aktyvus visuomeniniame bei konfesiniame Vilniaus ir Balstogės gyvenime, daugiausia kaip jaunimo ugdytojas. Atkūrus Lenkijos valstybę Zmitrovičius dar nuosekliau susitelkė pedagoginiam darbui, tapo Balstogės gimnazijos direktoriumi. 1924 m. persikėlė į Vilnių, čia įsteigė advokato kontorą, klestėjusią iki II pasaulinio karo. Po 1939 m. rugsėjo grįžo į švietimo sferą, kurią apskritai laikė savo pašaukimu. Po karo apsigyveno Olštyne, kur iki 1968 m. dirbo advokatu. Ten parašė savo atsiminimus, kuriuos 1978 m. paliko Vroclavo Osolinskių nacionaliniam institutui. Mirė 1980 m. kovo 3 d. Atsiminimai vertingi apibūdinant katalikų bažnyčios veiklą Vilniuje pirmaisiais XX a. metais, ypač dėl to, kad Zmitrovičius tuomet glaudžiai bendravo su bažnyčios hierarchais. Ne mažiau svarbu tai, kad atsiminimų autoriaus atmintyje išliko labai daug su švietimo, tautinio ir dorovinio auklėjimo aspektais susijusių dalykų. Tai aktualu ne vien Vilnijos, bet ir visų Lenkijos šiaurės rytų pakraščių istorijos tyrimams.

ENJózef Zmitrowicz was born on 9 October 1879, in a family of peasants in the District of Lida. In order to obtain education, he moved to Saint Petersburg, where he finished secondary school in 1894. In 1898, he studied at the state high school, where he became interested in Polish literature. He entered the Faculty of Law of the University of Saint Petersburg, but studied there only for three years. In 1904, he moved to Vilnius and started working as a teacher. Then he started promoting the ideas of the Philomath Society among youngsters. In 1906–1916, he was the secretary of the “Youth Fellowship Society”. Then he finished his law studies and obtained a lawyer’s licence in Kharkov. Before Poland regained its independence in 1918, he actively participated in the public and confessional life of Vilnius and Białystok. After the restoration of the independence of Poland, Zmitrowicz concentrated on pedagogical activities and became the director of the high school of Białystok. In 1924, he moved to Vilnius and established a legal firm, which flourished until WWII. After September 1939, he returned to the field of education, which he considered his calling. After the war, he settled down in Olsztyn, where he worked as a lawyer until 1968. He wrote his memoirs there. He died on 3 March 1980. His memoirs are valuable when describing activities of the Catholic Church in Vilnius in the first years of the 20th c., especially, due to the fact that during these years Zmitrowicz closely communicated with hierarchs of the church. The fact that the author of the memoirs depicted a great many of aspects related to national and moral education is not less important. It is relevant not only for historical research of Vilnija, but also for historical research of all northeast peripheries of Poland.
