Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Istorinė atmintis; Klaipėda; Kolektyvinė atmintis; Komunikacinė atmintis; Kultūrinė atmintis; Miesto kultūra; Multikultūrinis miestas, istorija, komunikacinė atmintis, Klaipėda, Vilnius; Tautinis tapatumas; Tautinė grupė; Vilnius; Collective memory; Communicative memory; Culture memory; Culture of city; Historical memory; Klaipeda, Vilnius; Klaipėda; Memel; Multicultural city, history, communicative memory, Klaipėda, Vilnius; National group; National identity; Vilnius; Wilno.

ENThe article aims to examine the use of the symbols of the past in the construction of the city identity of national groups. The interconnections between three narratives of the past (that of the national state, of the national group and of the city) in the collective memory of the national groups living in two cities with different history - Klaipėda and Vilnius - are analysed. The analysis is based on the results of qualitative sociological research conducted in the 2009, representing the main national groups living in the both cities. The identifications of national groups with the city in both cities only partly are based on national narratives (both - the dominating Lithuanian and that of the group); the great (sometimes the greatest) role in city identity construction plays the communicative and autobiographical memory of everyday life. The city identity of national groups living in Klaipėda is more based on the narrative of regional history, ethnic narratives and common city symbols (marine city, etc.), while the city identity of Vilnius' national groups is more diversified and more based on the narrative of multicultural city history. The Lithuanian national narrative, dominating in the public memory of the capital is more important only for some ethnocentric oriented Lithuanians. The Russians in Klaipėda mostly base their city identity on the collective memory of the Soviet period, while in Vilnius the symbols of the history of Russian culture in Lithuania prevail. The collective memory of the Poles in Vilnius is slightly more ethnocentric than that of other groups. [text from author]
