Summary / Abstract:

LT2004 m.

ENIn 2004, a group of Lithuanian representatives to the European Parliament (EP) was between “the most feminine” groups. 39 % of the delegation was women. It may be assumed that the composition of Lithuanian MEPs could have been conditioned because of the communicational features of the election. However, the observation results of two biggest Lithuanian newspapers which were performed on 11 May 2004–19 June 2004 revealed that during the election campaign to the EP female politicians were hardly seen and heard in a public political space. Only Kazimira Prunskienė became a central figure even in two (!) publications. Other women in the parliament and candidates to the EP were mentioned only fragmentary and, in general, they were not presented as the ones who had power to make decisions regarding the future of Lithuania. Analysed newspapers emphasized traditional roles of female politicians as housewives. Actually this attitude was not avoided by both: female journalists and female politicians. The research reveals that a factor of sex in the election campaign to the EP was not officially significant. However, the contents of the analysed press indirectly reveal a well-established policy of derogatory social images of women in Lithuania. An analysis of two newspapers proves that in public space of Lithuania a traditional male ethos prevails. It does not leave space and opportunities for the contrast of a post-modern multiple identity, articulation of more delicate symbols and values nor in the processes of political election, neither in everyday life.
