Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Frazeologizmas; Intencija; Komunikema; Metakalbinis komentaras; Razeologizmas; Stiliaus figūra; , intention; Communiceme; Figure; Intention; Meta-linguistic comment; Pbraseologis; Praseologism; Stylistic; Stylistic figure.

ENThe article discusses ways in which a phrase “a wrong word” is used. It is intended to determine a place of this comment into the system of metalinguistic comments more clearly. There are two different ways to use the phrase (metalinguistic comment) “a wrong word”. The phrase has a direct meaning which reveals that the speaker does not approve the use of the word in a text because there are some other words which are more suitable for the same situation. In this case, there are two ways to use it: simple, objective correction; correction as a syntactic style and an expressive mean. The phrase has a figurative meaning which intends to reveal that the idea or opinion expressed before is approved. However, it should not be stated that in this case the phrase “a wrong word” acquires an opposite meaning to the direct one (i.e. “a right word”). Usually, after this phrase, an expression of a previous idea is explained by other “more powerful” words, in a wider and a more comprehensive way. It may be stated that the phrase “a wrong word” is used to approve an opinion but not a linguistic mean which was used in order to express the opinion. In such contexts, a phrase “a wrong word” has a similar pragmatic function to the use of old Lithuanian sayings “I cannot find words”, “there are no words”, “there is a lack of words”, “it is hard to say”, “there is nothing to add” and etc. These comments are not related to correction; however, each of them reveals an approval to an expressed idea. A phrase “a wrong word” was directly translated from Russian. In nowadays Lithuanian its figurative meaning replaces the mentioned sayings by which a linguistic intention is expressed in more meaningful and different ways.
