ENThe article analyzes ways of composing the ode, which are proposed in the writings of the most prominent literary theorists of the 17th–18th centuries (Scaliger, Pontanus, Juvencius) and their interpretations, reflected in the lecture notes on poetics and rhetoric of Vilnius University and Jesuit Colleges of the GDL. We make a conclusion that odes were classified according to the rules of rhetoric and that most often, three main types of the ode were singled out: the encomiastic odes (odae encomiasticae), the ethic odes (odac ethicae) and the judicial or accusatory odes (odae iudiciales). The first article (in the cycle meant to analyze the specifics of the ode) discusses theoretic models of ode composition, the significance of Sarbievius (as a literary theorist) for the system of instruction in poetics and rhetoric, and the specifics of the judicial ode. The emphasis is put on the possibilities of ode composition offered by the instructors of GDL colleges, which are substantiated by examples from both Antique and local poets (of the latter, mostly from Sarbievius). The article also discusses the significance of the theoretical knowledge and practical command of the ode genre in the development of pupils' creative and aesthetic skills. [From the publication]
