Summary / Abstract:

1939 m. pab. Lietuvos švietimo ministerija buvusio Stepono Batoro universiteto reikalams tvarkyti paskyrė prof. Igną Končių. Jis faktiškai perėmė Vilniaus universiteto rektoriaus pareigas. Gruodžio 13 d. Seimas priėmė universitetų įstatymą, pagal kurį atkuriamas lietuviškas Vilniaus universitetas laikinai turėjo vadovautis Vytauto Didžiojo universiteto statutu. Nuo 1948 iki 1966 m. Vilniaus universiteto archeologai daug nuveikė tiriant Lietuvos archeologijos paminklus. Dažnai universiteto archeologai organizuodavo ekspedicijas kartu su tuometiniu Mokslų akademijos Istorijos institutu.Reikšminiai žodžiai: 1940-1966; A. ENThe Department of Archaeology was established in Vilnius University (VU) in September 1940. On the occasion of the Department’s 70th anniversary we review its long and complicated history, the activity of its employees and their input into the science of archaeology of Lithuania and the Baltic tribes, and the training of professional archaeologists. From 1940 the Department of Archaeology and the whole VU experienced a complicated period of Lithuanian history. The purpose of the article is to discuss the history of the Department of Archaeology of VU since 1940 (the date of establishment) until 1966, when the Department was “incorporated” into a newly formed department of the History of Lithuanian SSR. The discussion of the history of the Department must be based not only on the articles of other authors, memoires, but also on the archives, which provide a most objective view of the activity of the Department. In 1939 when Lithuania had regained Vilnius and part of the Vilnius region, the state had faced the issue of Vilnius University reconstruction. In the end of 1939 the Ministry of Education of Lithuania had appointed prof. Ignas Končius to manage matters of the former Steponas Batoras University. He actually took over the position of the Rector of VU. On 13 December the Seimas adopted the Law on Universities, according to which the re-established Lithuanian Vilnius University had to temporary follow the statute of Vytautas Magnus University. In 1948–1966 the archaeologists of VU had made a large input in the exploration of monuments of the Lithuanian archaeology. Archaeologists of the university often organised expeditions together with the Institute of History of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences of the time.
