Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Emigracija; Emigracija, vaiko poreikiai, vaiko psichosocialinis prisitaikymas; Vaiko poreikiai; Vaiko psichosocialinis prisitaikymas; Vaiko psichsocialinis prisitaikymas; Child's need; Children; Emigration; Emigration, child needs, psychosocial adaptation of children; Needs; Psychosocial adaptation of children; Psychosocial adjustment.

ENIn order to evaluate the satisfaction of children’s needs and their psychological adjustment during parental emigration from Lithuania, 220 teachers of schools of general education were interviewed. These teachers had classes with at least one child, whose parents had temporarily left to work abroad. The data were analysed with regard to the age of children, their gender and the duration of their parents’ leave. The study revealed that teachers believe that for most children parents’ absence did not influence the satisfaction of their physical and social needs. According to the teachers, negative effect of parent absence was experienced by 9.6% of children with regard to the satisfaction of their physical needs and by 16.8% of children in regard to the satisfaction of their social needs. When evaluating the impact of parents’ leave on children’s progress at school, teachers indicated that parents’ leave did not have any impact on the progress of 50.2% of children. 23.1% of children’s progress at school deteriorated after their parents left. According to teachers, no changes in the motivation of the majority of children after the leave of their parents were observed. The motivation of 19.5 children, whose parents had left, decreased. Teachers did not observe any negative changes in behaviour and emotions of the majority of children, whose parents had left, however, the behaviour of some children changed after their parents left. The results revealed that behavioural and emotional problems were more evident when the duration of emigration was longer than 3 years. The main preventive measures indicated by teachers, which may mitigate the impact of parents’ emigration on children, cover various fields and reflect the need for the complexity of directions of prevention.
