Title:
When private and public react together: regimes of privatization and their consequences in Visaginas
In the Book:
Re-tooling knowledge infrastructures in a nuclear town. Vilnius : Vilniaus dailės akademijos leidykla, 2021. P. 82-98
Summary / Abstract:

ENThe fully teleological and controlled birth and growth of Visaginas, as well as the absence of pre-Soviet history in its urban structure (and thus of spaces defined by private property and pre-industrial production and exchange) makes it a great case to study the process and the effects of the privatisation of the Soviet built environment. [...] To better understand the outcomes of privatization processes for Visaginas as not just a mono-functional post-Soviet town in Lithuania, but also as a formerly “nuclear” town, we realized that we needed to revisit the conceptual anchors of research on ownership transformation. In order to do so, we now consider the dominant concepts, approaches and dichotomies of already existing research on privatisation of housing and other assets in the former socialist region after 1990. [p. 82-83].
