Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article presents the analysis of the transformation of national identities of the Baltic States within the context of globalization. Among the most important factors, influencing the changes of the national identity in the post-Communist Eastern Europe are revival of nationalism, change of the political regime and globalization processes (especially the openness to the world and the increasing migration). The influence of globalization to the national identity manifests in the fact that the identity looses its integrity and stability, it becomes a situational, “here and now” and changes depending on the context. Nevertheless the discussion of the influence of the globalization on the national culture is still in progress and there is no agreement on the issue whether the globalization will bring assimilation and a standardized culture or, to the contrary, collisions with other cultures will strengthen the national cultures. The main idea of the article is that the national identity of the Baltic nations is in change. Identifying oneself exceptionally with the own nation is reducing, while the identifying with the specific location (for instance, a city or region, in which the individual resides) is increasing. In parallel another process, brought by globalization is developing, which is the situational identity, when an individual defines himself differently in each situation. Most frequently all the said identities (global, national and local) are merged.
