LTKada tautos atsiranda, kas sukelia etninį valymą, kaip valstybės gali susitaikyti? Tai klausimai, kuriais amerikiečių profesorius Timothy Snyderis, nacionalizmo ir Rytų Europos istorijos tyrėjas, pradeda įspūdingos apimties savo monografijos įvadą. Dar 2003 m. Yale’o universiteto leidykloje dienos šviesą išvydęs beveik keturių šimtų puslapių profesoriaus veikalas „The Reconstruction of Nations: Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, 1569–1999“ būtent šiais klausimais patraukė recenzentų JAV dėmesį. Kalbant apie ankstesnių recenzentų išskirtus monografijos pranašumus reikia priminti, kad lietuviškajam skaitytojų ratui nesunkiai pasiekiami veikalai, nagrinėjantys paskiras, nacionalinėmis vadinamas istorijas apie 1569 m. Liublino unijos formalizuotos Abiejų Tautų Respublikos teritorijose moderniaisiais laikais atsiradusius tautinius sąjūdžius ir valstybes. Lietuvių kalba veikalo, kuriame būtų pateikiama etnopolitinė Abiejų Tautų Respublikos istorijos sintezė, nėra. Yale‘o universiteto profesoriui rūpi išsiaiškinti: kaip ir kodėl žlugus Sovietų Sąjungai lenkams, lietuviams, baltarusiams ir ukrainiečiams, kitaip nei Pietryčių Europos tautoms, pavyko išvengti tarpusavio etninių konfliktų? Recenzijoje pristatoma politinė ir geopolitinė intriga, kurios atsakydamas į šį klausimą T. Snyderis nepastebėjo. Yale’o profesorius „Tautų rekonstrukciją“ iš esmės pateikė kaip lenkų rekonstrukciją, kurią įvykdė pokomunistinė Lenkijos Respublika, sąmoningai pasirinkdama savo užsienio politikos Rytuose paradigmą – depolonizuoti buvusias Abiejų Tautų Respublikos teritorijas.
ENWhen do nations appear? What influences ethnic cleansing? What are the ways to make up the quarrel between states? With these questions Timothy Snyder, an American professor and researcher of nationalism in the East European history, begins an introduction to his impressive size monograph. The professor's work “The Reconstruction of Nations: Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, 1569–1999” containing almost four hundred pages was published by Yale University Press in 2003. The above mentioned questions attracted the attention of the USA reviewers. Talking about the monograph's advantages distinguished by previous reviewers, it is worth mentioning that works analysing separate, the so-called, national histories about the 1569 Union of Lublin, that was formalised in territories of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, national movements and values, that appeared during the modern period, are available to Lithuanian readers. There is no work in Lithuanian that would present ethno-political synthesis of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth history. The professor of Yale University is interested in the following issues: how and why after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Poles, Lithuanians, Belorussians and Ukrainians, as distinct from South-East European nations, managed to avoid ethnic conflicts. The review presents a political and geopolitical intrigue that was not noticed by Snyder when he was answering the question. In principle, the professor of Yale presented the “Reconstruction of nations” as a reconstruction of the Poles that was applied by the post communist Republic of Poland by consciously choosing a paradigm of its own foreign policy in the East, i.e. to depolonise former territories of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.
