ENThe Academic Scouts were established at the University of Lithuania in Kaunas in 1924 and after World War I I were reconstituted together with the Lithuanian Scouts in the Displaced Persons' camps in Germany. They fused into a whole the following elements: acquiring a higher education, enjoying a vigorous, at times carefree student life, and fostering a Scout worldview. In doing so they first created in Lithuania, and then perfected in exile, a new form of civic activism that substantially enriched the social and cultural life of the emigre community. In the course of constructing their ideological identity they defined the Scout ideology and that of the Academic Scouts in particular, and discussed such topics as the relation between Scoutism as an ideology and as a method, the religiosity of the Scouts, the problems of Lithuanianism, and the place of Scoutism among other ideological and political movements. The Academic Scouts promoted an original idea of the Scout Thought as an ideological foundation and method of action applying ideology to everyday life. It may be said that the Academic Scout Movement in the period under consideration articulated its positions on issues relevant to the Lithuanian exile community, expounded its own value system, and adjusting to the conditions of diaspora life managed to become one of the leading ideological currents.
