Summary / Abstract:

LTXVII–XVIII a. datuojamų Susimąsčiusio Kristaus atvaizdų Lietuvos bažnyčiose yra išlikę vos keletas, tačiau išlikę istoriniai šaltiniai liudija, kad jų būta daug. XVII–XIX a. I pusėje Rūpintojėlio atvaizdai buvo devociniai. Iki XVI a. pabaigos Rūpintojėlio atvaizdas išlaikė viduramžišką šio atvaizdo sampratą, kurioje glūdi vienatvė, apleistumas ir mirties apmąstymas. O atvaizdo plitimas XVII–XVIII a. tampriai susijęs su pamaldumo Kristaus kančiai įsišaknijimu. ENThere are few images of a contemplating Jesus of the 17th–18th centuries left in Lithuanian churches, however, historical sources claim that a great number of such images once existed. From the 17th century to the first half of the 19th century, images of the Pensive Christ were devotional. They were placed in places where they could be observed at close range – the church porch, the chapel, side altars, next to columns or the choir. The image of the Pensive Christ preserved its medieval concept conveying contemplations on loneliness, neglect and death up to the end of the 16th century. The spread of the image in the 17th–18th century was closely related to the incrustation of devotion to the sufferings of Christ. Therefore, during the mentioned above period, the iconographic image is usually present in those churches, where works of art devoted to Jesus prevailed or at least several works devoted to the Christ were present. When analysing images of the Pensive Christ, it was noticed that it does not illustrate any moment in the life of Jesus Christ, but symbolises the whole cycle of sufferings of the Redeemer. In the 17th century the idea that this iconographic image of Christ appeared after his resurrection emerged. This idea existed to the beginning of the 20th century together with the medieval concept of the image. The tradition of depicting the iconographic image of the Pensive Christ, which was brought to Lithuania, had preserved its oldest variants. There were no significant differences in images of the Pensive Christ created by professional artists or folk artists. Folk craftsmen directly followed conventional iconographic schemes of the church image and did not accept any interpretations thereof.
