Summary / Abstract:

ENDemocracies with old traditions have plenty of studies of the gender phenomenon in politics, the differences of genders in the area of political powers and decision making. There are not enough of such studies in Lithuania and therefore the article presents the results of a 2004 qualitative survey that reveal the political roles of Lithuanian members of parliament based on their gender. The analysis is followed by the following conclusions: first of all, there are not enough women at the national parliament; although their professionalism is useful for making political decisions, the segregation of genders at the parliament is based on the traditional breakdown of labour – women are usually trusted with political leadership in solving social security, health, child and family issues; second, not all of the top government positions are available to women, some invisible “ceiling” exists in this regard; women have less freedom than men when it comes to deciding on the limits of their competences in the parliamentary activities, less possibilities to seek the desirable career; third, such structural differences and structures of opportunities based on gender shape a certain style of politics. Female members of the Lithuanian parliament are considered less smart and cunning, subtle than male parliamentarians. Therefore, men and women in political government are treated differently. On the other hand, there are still too few women in politics for them to be able to voice their opinions and feminine views effectively without having to abide by the traditional male style and principles of politics.
