Summary / Abstract:

ENWhen exploring Lithuanian art of the second half of the 20th c., we inevitably encounter a diversity of testimonies of the prohibitions imposed by the Soviet system, restrictions of the creative scope, as well as style and genre related restraints. They are abundant in published and publicised memoirs of contemporaries. The topics of adaptation to the Soviet system, collaboration with it and opposing it have been investigated in many art critical texts published after independence was restored. Art critics indicated the phenomena of “silent modernism” and half-individualism as the consequence of coexistence with the Soviet authorities. However, having overviewed published material, the questions whether Soviet censorship of art actually existed and if yes, what it actually looked like and how it functioned, still remain open. It is important to mention that the term “censorship” was not used in the then documents of the Union of Artists or the Ministry of Culture; it can be found only in the documents of the General Directorate for the Protection of State Secrets in the Press under the USSR Council of Ministers (Glavlit). The paper searches for the answers to the questions what Soviet censorship of art looked like and how it functioned. Based on archival sources – the documents of the USSR Union of Artists, the USSR Ministry of Culture, the USSR Glavlit and other data – the paper aims to ascertain the principles of functioning of Soviet censorship of art, its controlled areas, the hierarchical structure as well as decision-making and adoption procedures. The document research of art censorship is one of the steps that pushes the mythologised imagination of this phenomenon closer towards reality.
