ENThe goal of this paper is to show that the majority of English and Lithuanian formulas of linguistic etiquette are almost adequate, i. e. they do not have fundamental differences in their semantic and grammatical expression. Some inadequacy may appear in delicate communicative situations and it can be related with different structures of the languages and the position of a translator and his translating strategies. It is important to mention, that such inadequacy of etiquette formulas reflects national peculiarities. The students of Business Management may study linguistic etiquette in ESL seminars, analysing different etiquette situations presented in novels and comparing the adequacy of rendering them in the translation. It helps them understand that the knowledge of linguistic etiquette as well as good linguistic competence will lead to successful communication with foreign partners.
