Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article reveals the attitude of teachers working at general secondary schools to the teacher’s profession in the context of the changing reality. The purpose of the study is to analyse teachers’ attitudes to the teacher’s profession during the period of reforms in the Lithuanian school. Results of studies performed in 1988-2002 have revealed that the majority of teachers are satisfied with the teacher’s profession and work out of vocation but the situation in the school under reformation has created great pressure for them. During the period in question, the number of teachers working at school purely out of duty was increasing. The study has revealed teachers’ views of the prestige of the teacher’s profession in the public: the majority of respondents pointed out that the teacher’s profession was not prestigious. The changing reality has corrected the prestige of the teacher’s profession in our society – this profession has lost the status it used to have and has acquired a lower one. There is a correlation established between the relation of respondents with the teacher’s profession and their attitude to the prestige of this profession in the public – teachers working out of vocation evaluate the teacher’s profession more positively than their colleagues working at school just out of duty or forcing themselves to. Conclusions, proposals and recommendations are given on the basis of the study data analysis as to how to shape the educational policy in the future and improve training of teachers for the Lithuanian school.
