Kunigas Juozas Šnapštys-Margalis: gyvenimas ir veikla

LTXIX-XX a. sandūros Lietuvos kunigija dažniau asocijuojasi su aukštesniųjų dvasininkų luomo atstovų veikla ir nuopelnais tautinio sąjūdžio kontekste. Tačiau plėtojant tautiškumą ir tautinę kultūrą reikšmingą darbą atliko daug paprastų, iš valstiečių kilusių ir su jais artimai susijusių kunigų. Jie stiprino kaimo žmonių kultūrinį gyvenimą, skatino dalyvauti politiniame gyvenime, išsakyti ir ginti savo interesus. Elgesiu ir kalbomis buvo pavyzdys parapijiečiams, veikė jų pasaulėžiūrą ir nuostatas. Nušviesti XX a. pradžios kaimo kunigo gyvenimą nėra paprasta, nes trūksta šaltinių. Straipsnyje, remiantis archyviniais ir memuariniais šaltiniais, bandoma apžvelgti kunigo Juozo Šnapščio-Margalio gyvenimą ir veiklą, kuri labiau rodė ne inteligentijos ar žymių veikėjų, bet būtent paprastų kaimo žmonių mentalitetą, požiūrį į to meto problemas. Vadovaudamasis nuostata, kad kunigo pareiga yra tarnauti ne tik Dievui, bet ir Tėvynei bei žmonėms, J.Šnapštys neapsiribojo sakramentų teikimu ir religiniais pamokymais. Jis padėjo valstiečiams spręsti jų gyvenimo problemas, skatino dalyvauti politiniame ir kultūriniame gyvenime. Charakterio ypatybės ir gyvenamojo laikotarpio specifika lėmė tai, kad jis niekada nebuvo tik kunigas, bet kartu visuomenininkas, poetas, žurnalistas, liaudies gydytojas. Neatsispyręs kai kurioms ydoms - kortoms, alkoholiui, netolerancija - nuoširdžiai rūpinosi kaimo žmonių mentaliteto kėlimu. Kunigo Juozo Šnapščio-Margalio veiklos, kasdieninio gyvenimo apžvalga padės geriau pažinti ir suvokti kaimo kunigų vietą ir įtaką to meto visuomenėje.

ENLithuanian priesthood of the end of 19th – beginning of 20th century is more frequently associated with activities of higher level priests and their merits in the national movement context. However, when developing the nationality and the national culture a significant job was done by a good deal of simple priests of peasant origin, who strengthened the cultural life of rural people, urged them to participate in political life, express and protect their interests. Their behaviour and speeches were an example for their parishes and influenced the parishioners’ worldview. It is difficult to describe the life of a village priest of the beginning of the 20th century, since there is a lack of appropriate sources. The article, referring to archive and memoir sources, makes attempts on overviewing the life and activities of priest Juozas Šnapštys-Margalis, which was more of an evidence of the mentality and view of the relevant problems of simple village people, rather than that of the intelligentsia or well-known people. Observing the statement that a priest must serve not only God, but also the Motherland and the people, J. Šnapštys did not limit himself to religious lectures. He helped peasants in resolution of their problems, urged them to participate in the political and cultural life. The traits of his character and the specificities of the period determined that J. Šnapštys was never just a priest, but also a poet, publicist and a doctor. Though not able to reject certain vices – gambling, alcohol, intolerance, he took genuine care of raising of rural people’s mentality. The overview of the life and everyday activities of priest Juozas Šnapštys-Margalis will help the reader to get a better understanding of the position and influence of rural priests in the society of the period.
