Summary / Abstract:

ENNational self-identification becomes a phenomenon of ever increasing complexity in the contemporary world of global relations. Everything starts to be relative and temporary here: individuals become more and more mobile, therefore territory looses its decisiveness. Strong national identity can no longer be consolidated by the traditional myths and symbols; it rather requires new live everyday experiences of togetherness of the community members. The empirical analysis of Lithuanian identity reveals that perception of oneself, as belonging to the nation is very strong among Lithuanians: the absolute majority of respondents identify themselves with Lithuanian nation. It turns out rather unexpectedly that this self-identification is not differentiated by the demographic factors that influence nearly all value judgements, such as age and education of respondents, etc. The disclosed regularities support the assumption that the global consciousness of an individual, as well as individualistic self-perception, does not prevent strong national self-identification. On the other hand, empirical data show that perception of oneself as a member of the nation might be influenced by the factors that are often treated as accidental or shortlived. For instance, national self-identification is influenced by certain economic motives. Moreover, due to the increasing importance of the political constituent of the nation in the world of nation-states, self-perception in national terms becomes more and more influenced not only by shared historical memories of the community but also by certain present-day political circumstances.
