Summary / Abstract:

Kauno muzikiniame teatre. Šiuo metu Lietuvos teatrų repertuaruose spektaklių gintaro tema nėra.Reikšminiai žodžiai: Gintaras; Jūratė ir Kastytis; Lietuvos baletas; Amber; Jurate and Kastytis; Lithuanian ballet.

ENAlthough in the interwar years a lot of other nations’ schools were opened in Lithuania and there was a certain national minorities’ education policy, small attention has been dedicated to the subject in Lithuanian researchers’ studies. The article aims at analyzing the trends of development and traits of Latvian schools in Lithuania in 1918-1940. In the twenties of the 20th century there was a smaller number of Latvians in Lithuania than that of Russians, Poles, Germans or Jews but they had more primary schools, which can be explained by Lithuanian Government’s different policy with regard to the Latvian minority, which was determined by good neighbour relations with Latvia. The number of Latvian schools in Lithuania, functioning during the first decade of the Independence changed insignificantly and fluctuated from 8 to 11, later it reduced but in the thirties it grew up to 13, which was influenced by the Lithuanian and Latvian school convention, concluded in 1931 and valid till 1937, which created favourable conditions for functioning of Latvian schools in Lithuania and for Lithuanian schools in Latvia. On the other hand, the Latvians’ activities in Lithuania after the conclusion of the convention raised the education heads’ concern: the Latvians’ cultural and other activities were monitored, Lithuanian children were not allowed to attend the Latvian schools and attempts were made to limit their number. The only Latvian pro-gymnasium in Lithuania was functioning in 1921-1938 in Joniškis, later on it was transferred to Žeimelis. Since the pro-gymnasium was attended by a small number of pupils and it was difficult to support, it was closed. The Latvian schools, except one private school in Kaunas, were funded by municipalities, material support was also provided by the Latvian community, certain Latvian institutions and the Ministry of Education of Lithuania.
