Summary / Abstract:

ENControversial tendencies are held by Mykolas Šulcas' contemporaries and up-to-date scholars with regard to the evaluation of Professor as an architect and pedagogue. Šulcas' career as a theorist was beclouded by his misfortunes as a practician. Thus Šulcas' notes of lectures are dealt with in the article on the basis of which Šulcas' contribution to the development of teaching architecture and to the theory of architecture is attempted tobe proved. In the text the architect is revealed as a highly educated personality. The prevalence of the concept (J. L. Durand) of utilitarian architecture in the theory of the architecture of Lithuania was challenged by his views. Some of Šulcas' ideas are closely related to those of R. F. de Chambray and the rationalist M.-A. Laugier. Šulcas was the first professor of the architecture at the University who has pointed out the value of historicism being widespread in Europe and who attached himself to the new enlightened aesthetics of romanticism. A great variety of opinions rather than usual information was presented to the students by the professor, and then a room for favourable conditions of finding a proper solution was sought. The article is attempted to prove Šulcas' theory not being as an eclectic position or the striving for the views of the only authority but a modern independent attitude characteristic of the tendencies of the theory of the early 19th century in Europe. By this theory we are allowed to be acquainted with the knowledge which the students of the Vilnius University could gain at their lectures of architecture. [From the publication]
