Stačiatikių Bažnyčia Lietuvoje 1944-1990 m.: persekiojimas ar protegavimas
LTIki Chruščiovo "atšilimo" pabaigos sovietinė valdžia vykdė lygiagrečią religinę politiką: vieni reikalavimai, įstatymai taikyti Stačiatikių, kiti - kitoms Bažnyčioms. Už kiek palengvintas veikimo sąlygas Stačiatikių Bažnyčia privalėjo vykdyti sovietų valdžios politines užduotis. Lietuvoje tokia užduotis 1945 m. buvo numatyta kova su katalikybe, tačiau negausi, į lietuvių visuomenę bei kultūrą neintegruota, intelektualių pajėgų stokojanti Stačiatikių Bažnyčia neįstengė (o ir nesistengė) jos atlikti. Savo politinį vaidmenį Bažnyčia atliko faktiškai vien deklaruodama lojalumą sovietinei sistemai. Lietuvoje masiškai uždarinėjant visų konfesijų maldos namus, areštuojant kunigus ir vyskupus, jau pirmąjį penkmetį po karo išryškėjo Stačiatikių ir kitų Bažnyčių, ypač Katalikų, padėties skirtumas. Tai nepatiko vietos valdžiai, labiausiai suinteresuotai stačiatikių vienuolynų ir bent kelių Vilniaus stačiatikių bažnyčių uždarymu, nacionalizuoto turto naudojimu savo nuožiūra. Tačiau RSBRT įgaliotinio Lietuvos TSR pastangomis stačiatikių interesai dažniausiai būdavo apginami ir Stačiatikių Bažnyčios padėtis bemaž du dešimtmečius liko stabili. SSKP atsisakius Stačiatikių Bažnyčios protegavimo politikos, Lietuvoje ji ėmė nykti. Nors Bažnyčios struktūra čia nukentėjo nežymiai (juridiškai lyg ir likviduotas moterų vienuolynas buvo perkeltas į vyrų vienuolyno teritoriją ir faktiškai gyvavo toliau, uždaryta apie 15 bažnyčių, bemaž visos antrosios bendruomenių bažnyčios, filijos), tačiau netekus nuolatinių Maskvos patriarchijos dotacijų gyvybingos liko tik didžiųjų miestų bendruomenės.
ENTill the end of Khrushchev’s “thaw” the Soviet authorities executed parallel religious policies, i. e. different requirements were applied to the Orthodox and other churches since the Orthodox Church had to execute the political tasks, given by the Soviet authorities. One of such tasks, foreseen with regard to Lithuania in 1945 was fighting Catholicism, however the not numerous Orthodox Church, not integrated into the Lithuanian society and culture and lacking intellectual resources did not manage to complete it. The Church performed its political role solely by declaring its loyalty to the Soviet system. As meeting-houses of all confessions were being closed and priests and bishops being arrested throughout Lithuania, already during the first five years after the war there emerged the difference of the status of the Orthodox and other churches, especially the Catholic Church. The local authorities did not like it, since they were interested in closing the Orthodox monasteries and at least several churches in Vilnius and using the nationalized property at their discretion. However by attempts of the representative of the RSBRT in the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic the Orthodox interests were most frequently protected and the status of the Orthodox Church remained stable for about two decades. After the Communist Party of the Soviet Union refused the policy of protection of the Orthodox Church, there commenced the decline of the Church in Lithuania. Although the structure of the Church suffered insignificantly (a legally liquidated women’s convent was transferred to the territory of men’s monastery and actually continued its existence, about 15 churches were closed, all of which were only secondary community churches), only communities of the big cities remained vital after the end of the continuous grants from Moscow‘s Patriarchy.
