Summary / Abstract:

ENNames of products are one of the most important parts of the publicity text. The purpose of the article is to establish the largest semantic fields of the origin of the names of products and reveal the semantic characteristics of the Lithuanian names of products. Names of products are interesting as they can be attributed to both proper and appellative nouns. Types of the forms of the names of products, their functions and motivation are discussed in the article, based on the works of M. Baumgart, N. Janich and Ch. Platen, German philologists. The theoretical part presents the comparison of German and Lithuanian names of products. Comprehensive analysis of the Lithuanian names of products allowed establishing the following semantic fields of origin: flora, fauna, natural phenomena, characters of fairy tales and stories, geographical names, national symbols and heroes, emotions, music and dances. The most frequent names of products are the names of flowers, plants, towns, historic personalities and important historic place-names. The name of the product often encodes the features of the product (e.g. kriaušė (Eng. pear)), form of the product (e.g. baravykas (Eng. porcini)), they appeal to feelings (e.g. švelnumas, meilė, svajonė (Eng. tenderness, love, dream)). The semantics of household appliances, work, school, time is absent in the names of products.
