Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Kryžiaus žygiai; Muziejai; Parodos; Eksponatai; Crusades; Museums; Exhibitions; Artefacts; Kryžiaus karų epocha; įvaizdis; Muziejus; Image of Epoch of Crusaders; Museum.

ENMuseum expositions help to understand the past, to form and maintain national identity and public spirit, provide a visual version of history and reflect our point of view towards the past events. The purpose of this paper is to review the image of the epoch of Crusades in expositions of Lithuania. The image of history in museum expositions is conveyed through material valuables, material heritage, things, documents and relics, textual information in expositions playing only an additional role. This is background, which helps to combine all exhibits into one integral picture or logical circuit, which reflects or symbolizes different features of an epoch. Thus the number and variety of exhibits determine the image, content, and the level of an impression the viewer gets; they also determine how clearly the exhibition reveals the problem. Very few material valuables or relics, which may help museums to describe better this period of history, are still left from the epoch of Crusades. That is why some Lithuanian museums cannot have an exposition of this epoch or have very poor ones. This is clearly seen from the Internet descriptions of museum expositions. Only ten Lithuanian museums mention this period of history. Not a single museum in Lithuania has a section called the Epoch of Crusades. Historians, dividing all history of Lithuania into certain periods, do not distinguish this period. The epoch of Crusades in museum expositions is linked with the end of the late West European religious orders. However, museums have very few original exhibits to describe this topic; thus all museums use a lot of reconstructions, schemes, maps, and pieces of art. The beginning of the Lithuanian state is shown through archaeological findings, materials found in cemeteries and hillforts, especially weaponry and metal ornaments as the attributes of nobility. The beginning of the statehood is usually linked with money, reflecting one of the main attributes of the state - a money system. Wars against Livonia and the Teutonic Order are usually described by exposing weaponry of both conflicting sides, by showing the findings and reconstructions of late hillforts, emphasizing battles won by the Lithuanian army - Saulės, Durbe, Tanneburg, Pabaiskas battles, and showing their schemes. Expositions have a lot of hillfort photos; regional museums provide only local material. Pieces of art are widely used as well - pictures of well known battles, romantic portraits of dukes, sculptures and medals with monarchs' portraits. Expositions also have a lot of copies of historical documents, sometimes just texts or fragments of various documents; battle diagrams are rare. To show the takeover of Christian culture, museums usually exhibit copies of various documents, since they have no original exhibits. The late period of Lithuanian pre-statehood and the creation of the state is dominated by military thematic - guns and weaponry, mounds and castles. However, the nature of wars is not described, internal struggles among nobility and plunder campaigns to neighbouring and far-away lands are not mentioned. The creation of the state and its monarchs' wars against West European feudal lords is described by museum expositions as a long-term fight, in which our rulers are real heroes who successfully defend their country. Thus museum expositions in Lithuania describe the epoch of Crusades as a heroic period of history, newly-born country's fight against Christian Europe, without emphasizing the acceptance of Christianity.
