Summary / Abstract:

ENIn Lithuanian funeral laments mourning the passing away of a young unmarried person, sometimes the metaphoric parallels of death-wedding and funeral-marriage are developed. These texts present funeral as a sad kind of wedding or wedding eve ceremonies, the deceased person is perceived here as a bride or a bridegroom, while friends or relatives assume roles of groomsmen or bridesmaids. Metaphoric treatment of death as wedding and funeral as marriage ceremony is attested in numerous folkloric traditions of other European peoples as well. In Latvia, the first day of funeral of an unmarried deceased person was referred to as the wedding day, while only the second one was called funeral. Until the beginning of the 20"1 century, almost on all the territory of Russia, at the funerals of young unmarried people weddings used to be staged. The funeral-marriage parallel is particularly prominent in the Balkan countries. In Greece, similar texts are lamented at funerals and sung at weddings (only insignificant variations are observed depending on the context of performing, otherwise the similar main melody and narrative structures are retained). The phenomenon of death-wedding parallel of a young unmarried person might be caused by the perceived totality of the life cycle rituals. According to the traditional worldview, passing away of a young unmarried man or a girl breaches the life cycle, or the natural sequence of events, which should proceed as follows: birth - marriage - death. In order to avoid undesirable after-effects of this breach (i.e. to ensure admittance of the deceased into the underworld and prevent him / her from haunting the living, etc.), as well as at least partly compensate for the lethal injustice suffered by the deceased person, the unperformed wedding used to be celebrated or at least symbolically mentioned. The perceived totality of the life cycle rituals requires incorporation of the omitted rites into the subsequent ones, thus traces of one missing syntagma of the life cycle, i.e. the wedding, are transferred to another one, i.e. the funeral. Such transferring presupposed formation of the metaphoric image of funeral-marriage in Lithuanian funeral laments and customs, as well as in the funeral rites of other peoples.
