Summary / Abstract:

ENObjects are always materialization of ideas, able to tell a lot of their creator or user, they can also be witnesses of politics and ideology. The article examines the way apartments’ interior in the Soviet Lithuania during “the thaw” period embodied the attempts of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union to transform the society and create a “new Soviet person”. After the Resolution “On Elimination of Excess in Designing and Construction”, adopted in 1955 by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the Cabinet Council of the USSR attempts were made to get rid of the signs, evidencing the past. In the area of dwelling interior that manifested in fighting philistinism, however not only on the aesthetical, but also on the worldview level. Economy (reduction of construction costs at the expense of comfort), minimalism and functionality became the most important criteria when designing dwelling interior. Industrial production methods strongly influenced the selection and construction of furniture materials. Similar processes occurred in the Western world, however in the Soviet Union they were peculiar in the way the modernization had a political objective and the market of the goods, intended for dwellings’ interior was marked with the sign of continuous deficiency. The politics of the Soviet Union in essence fought the feeling of privacy and security even if a person was at home. The fact of limited disposal of one’s own dwelling space becomes especially important in order to be able to understand the processes, going on in Lithuania both during the Soviet times and in today’s independent Lithuania. The feeling of inability to entrench at home, influenced by the Soviet ideology, which resulted from the inability to have free disposal of private property, eventually formed a certain Soviet habitus, whose influence can still be felt at present.
