LTStraipsnyje apžvelgiami krikščioniško kalendoriaus katalikų ir stačiatikių šventės - apaštalo Andriejaus išvakarių ir dienos svarbiausi merginų apeiginiai veiksmai baltų ir slavų tautose XIX a. - XX a. pradžioje.

ENThe article provides an overview of Catholic and Orthodox holidays of the Christian calendar, i. e. the most important ritual acts, performed by girls on the eve and day of apostle Andrew in the Baltic and Slavic nations in the 19th – beginning of the 20th century. The researchers’ attention is drawn to the peculiarities of one time dimension, i. e. the traditions of the commencement of the Christian advent through the ritual acts, performed by girls, the commonalities and peculiarities of their individual elements are provided, allowing for revealing the structure of the traditions of the national religious holiday. The beginnings of the signs of girls’ initiations during the Andrew’s Day in the 19th – beginning of the 20th century are related with the trial of girls’ maturity in terms of physical, psychological and household activities’ aspects. The ritual acts performed several functions, i. e. informed on the girl’s maturity, her readiness for marriage, shaped the society’s opinion on the inevitable marriage, acted as a psychological tool, helping a girl to believe the success of marriage and formed the basis for marriage with the only chosen one, seen in a dream or in another way, thus denying any other personal choice. The structural comparative analysis of the rituals, performed by girls and the New Testament showed both the religious syncretism of the Christian maturity rituals and the Christian sensing of its individual elements in the folk religion. A degradation of such rituals is noticed in the 20th century, as the spiritual maturity of a person and strengthening of the faith through conformation started to be dedicated more attention in Catholicism. In rural consciousness the girls’ rituals were pushed out from the religious to the para-religious area of ritual activities, related with calendar charms, although, as earlier, they had an initiating function.
