Summary / Abstract:

ENThe objects of the discussion in the article are the ornamental symbols used in the 19th century in Lithuanian folk embroidery, such as pieces of folk garb and the ritual bedding. Since the major part of embroidery was made for such ceremonies as christening, wedding and funeral, the author tries to find the connection between the ritual as such and the symbols of decoration. In the things mentioned above two groups of symbols are distinguished - those of the Earth and of Heaven, which express the idea of birth and eternity and suit the pattern of myth creation. Due to the ritual there was kept in the things the tradition of ornamentation not only as an aesthetic but also as an informative category.
