ENThe article refers to E. Cassirer’s idea that a man is such a living being who creates symbols. Lithuanian national revival first of all inspired acknowledgement of the meaning of ethnic values and the necessity to incorporate the experience of the 20th century into local cultural development. That’s why the investigations of Baltic symbols by the representatives of various scientific fields have a particular importance for contemporary cultural activities and artistic creation. The analysis, description ahd classification should carry a synthetic character and help to better comprehend the origin and uniqueness of the Baltic symbols as well as their relations with neighbouring Germanic. Slavic and Scandinavian cultures. One of the ultimate tasks of such researches could be working out a specific dictionary or glossary of the Baltic symbols.
