ENThe article analyses historical sources of Vilnius, the capital city of Lithuania, which were specifically concerned with the city and its institutions and were published in the 18th-20th centuries. They are compared on the chronological basis with the documents of Vilnius city and its inhabitants entered in the books of inscriptions of the Lithuanian Metrica, which were classified by archeographer Romualdas Firkovičius. The documents of Vilnius city and its inhabitants recorded in the Lithuanian Metrica help bridge those gaps in the sources, which formed when the Russian troops seized Vilnius in 1655. Then the city archive suffered especially greatly. More than a half of all documents about Vilnius, inscribed in the Lithuanian Metrica, were drawn up before the middle of the 17th century, that is, prior to the Russian invasion. In writing the new history of Vilnius the use of documents of the Lithuanian Metrica that have not been used thus far, shall create the possibility to solve new issues of the history of the city and go deeper into the investigations that have been carried out up till now.
