Summary / Abstract:

ENUntil now, scholars in Lithuania have paid the most attention to studying the expression and development of the cultural identity of the inhabitants of the big cities of Lithuania, Vilnius and Kaunas. This article is the first purposeful attempt to grasp the roots of the cultural identity of the inhabitants of the city of Alytus by presenting it from an emic perspective. The purpose of the research is to investigate what constitutes the identity of a modern Alytus resident. The research was carried out in April-June 2022. The data were collected both by classical ethnographic methods, such as observation, conversation, questionnaires, and by creating a survey on the online survey platform www.manoapklausa.lt. The study included 141 respondents, 69% (97) women and 31% (43) men. The research revealed that 2 main symbols represent Alytus: the coat of arms of the city, which depicts a white rose (thistle) under a red background and the sign (logo) Alytus-Myliu (I love Alytus). According to the respondents, the spirit of the city is best reflected and represented by the White Rose Bridge, the sculpture of the Angel of Liberty, Alytus Mound and the Town Hall Square. Meanwhile, the weakest relationship is with Alytus airport. In conclusion, it can be said that a “real citizen of Alytus” is the one who loves his / her city, at least partially considering himself / herself a Dzūkas/ė. They should also have been born, raised and live in a city or suburbs. It has been noticed that the respondents characterize a “real citizen of Alytus” as the one possessing good manners of a resident of the ethnographic region of Dzūkija: sincerity, spirit of community, hospitality, and activity. A special relationship with nature is also emphasized. According to the respondents, their manner of speech is not very different from the standard language, but the use of individual Dzūkian words, “stretching” of vowels, use of the preposition in, expressions that are only understandable to Alytus people are clearly noticeable. Although a “real citizen of Alytus” is more often idealized, criticism of low social and cultural activity comparing to a “villager” in a bad sense, is also expressed.
