ENThe article addresses problems related to teaching theoretical disciplines of music in Lithuania. Teaching methods of solfegio, harmony and music history are discussed and compared in the context of the world’s pedagogics of music theory. Focus is placed on the common drawbacks, apparent in the West as well as in Lithuania: discrepancy between ear training methods and the specific characteristics of human aural perception; the dominance of classical harmony over the harmony of other styles; treatment of history as the accumulation of facts. In the author’s opinion, these problems can be attributed to the absence of the pedagogics of music theory in Lithuania. Developing the latter would allow the consolidation of music theory and modern educational psychology. Integrating the science of music and the science of human being would pave the way for modern methodology based on the auditive nature of music cognition and the cognitive development of human being. This would imply that cognition is testified not only by the amount of information, but also by the ability to realize the information in a specific activity considering one’s aptitude and needs.
