Summary / Abstract:

ENThis article addresses the issue of military transformations during the Jagiellonian period (1386–1572), framed as an integral era encompassing the transformation from medieval to early modern armies. It is based on recent research, primarily serving as a review of the state of research since 1989. The first part discusses higher-level factors influencing the shape of wars and the military, including the reorientation of major foreign policy directions, economic foundations, the specifics of army formation in the context of the late medieval estate monarchy, and the introduction of technical and technological innovations such as the widespread use of gunpowder weapons. The second part presents theoretical proposals aimed at moving away from the classical, idiographic model of military studies and highlighting the essence and role of the military in the transformation of the state structure at the end of the medieval period and the beginning of modernity. Key approaches include: the bellocentric (historical-sociological) perspective, the center-periphery concept adapted for military studies, the paradigm of the so-called military revolution, and the concept of economic history of wars. The goal and main objective is to attempt studies on the absent historiographical model of the military system of the Jagiellonian state.
