Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article presented here is a biographical sketch of a Polish landowner settled in Lithuania between 1914 and 1945 – Władysław Bichniewicz – who was also the great-grandson of Fryderyk Chopin’s eldest sister, Ludwika Jędrzejewicz. After completing his agricultural studies, Bichniewicz first administered the estate in Poniemuniek (Lithuanian Panemunėlis), which belonged to his wife’s uncle, Kazimierz Świątecki, and later became its owner. He was a member of several organisations of agricultural producers in the Republic of Lithuania. He was awarded a state decoration by the Lithuanian authorities for his services to agricultural cooperatives. As a result of the occupation of the Republic of Lithuania by the Red Army, he had to leave his estate. In 1945, he left the land of his ancestors forever and, together with his family, came to Poland. He settled in Toruń at that time. The life of Władysław Bichniewicz reflects well the fate of many members of the Polish landed gentry living in the territories of the Republic of Lithuania in the first half of the twentieth century.
