ENThe Lieporiai archaeological complex, including the Lieporiai 1st settlement, has been investigated since 1987. In 2004 investigations of the settlement W part were continued. An area of 123 nr having a 10-70 cm thick cultural layer was investigated. Traces of three buildings were discovered. At the location of the building No. 5 (orientated E-W) there was a 15-30 cm thick layer of charred wood particles and a multilevel hearth surrounded by a stone pavement. In the hearth a broken pot with a rusticated surface was found. A 20 cm thick layer of charred wood particles marked the location of the building No. 6 (orientated NE-SW), whereas at the location of the building No. 7 (orientated SE-NW) there was a stone pavement and a hearth. In the investigated area two large pits were found; one of them could have been a well. The pits are going to be investigated further. In the cultural layer of the settlement rusticated pottery and two types of smooth-surface pottery (pinched-impressed or bearing dimple ornament and smooth with no ornament), several iron items and a lot of stone tools and their fragments were found. At the assumed locations of the S and N fences of the settlement established using the bioenergetic method (by E. Prascevičius) 12 test pits were excavated, but neither fences, nor other constructions were found. Results of the year 2004 investigations did not change the settlement chronology (the 4th-8th century), nevertheless investigations revealed that the houses were built in two stages. The earlier one may be simultaneous to the iron melting stage of the Lieporiai settlement (the 4th-6th century). The investigated area may be interpreted as a habitation area of the settlement.
