Preliminary anthropological analysis results for materials found in 2006
Summary / Abstract:

ENIn all, the remains of about 878 individuals (846 inhumations, 32 cremations) from 34 sites were examined macroscopically and under low magnification. The materials were processed in accordance with the standard procedures (cleaning, preservation, identification, and documentation). Cremated bones from previous years, which had been previously been stored at other institutions, were likewise included in this analysis. Archaeologist L. Kurila also participated in the examination of the cremations. Non-human bones found in cremations were separated out and transferred to the LVA Osteological Laboratory for examination. Any scientifically valuable materials were stored in the depositories of VU MF and made available for further analysis. This paper presents a short report on these materials. The analysis of Iron Age cremations revealed that individuals of both sexes and of various ages, including children, were regularly cremated.Among the larger cemeteries from the 2nd millennium AD, burials from Dubingiai castle were further analysed (55 individuals, some of whom bore signs of healed traumas caused by edged weapons). The age profiles of the burials from Aguonų St. in Vilnius (149 individuals) suggest an epidemic-style mortality (a prevalence of young individuals); other pathologies included a case of bone tuberculosis. The burials from Turgaus St. 37 in Klaipėda (181 individuals) are notable for their dental pathologies, including marked calculus formation, few cases of healed traumas, and one case of tuberculosis and probably represent middle class Klaipėda residents from the 16th–17th century. The burials found at A. Rotundo St. 4A in Vilnius (83 undisturbed burials plus at least 19 individuals from destroyed graves) probably represent a late sample that is likely to have originated from a hospital since several cases of pathologoanatomic dissection were found. Finally, 6 males from Juodkrantë and 15 from the courtyard of the Basilian monastery in Vilnius were probably casualties of the Second World War as the dental fillings and dental prostheses suggest that date and the multiple splintered fractures, the cause of death.
